About Jade

When I was living in Wellington in the mid-1970s,
I got together with Peter Conway and Mike Dew
and we formed Jade. Our first gig was for the inmates
of Arohata women's prison. We moved from playing
Bob Dylan and Neil Young covers into traditional British folk music (although we were never precious - we played anything and everything we liked).

We started with a regular spot at the Settlement restaurant and later held down weekly gigs at the
Royal Tiger and the Cambridge. We also appeared
at cafes, clubs, universities and folk festivals around
the country.

Television appearances included New Faces, Grunt Machine, and the Max Cryer show (on which we appeared as the Gumboot Orchestra and Chorus, as winners of the Viking Records Topical Song Contest).

Jade disbanded in 1977 when I went overseas, but over the years, Peter, Mike and I still got together to play music whenever we got the chance.

In 2006 Jade played concerts at the Wellington folk music club (Acoustic Routes) and the Levin Folk Club
to commemorate 30 years since we began.

Here's a live track from our glory days ...

Unfortunately Peter was not well enough to play, so our old friend Simon Burgess stepped in to fill the gap.
