A poem for the month – January

Gun emplacements, Matiu Somes Island

Ugly grey concrete, sinking into the grass

We climb in and out on steps and ledges

Call out “Hello” just to hear our booming voices

Laugh and jump, balance on the edges

of walls. Look through empty windows

Forgetting the purpose of these strange,

dumb ruins. Yet, they shout, “Do not forget.

See how quickly the world can change.”
